General Bio

Dr. Alessi graduated from the University of Rome and completed his residency and neuromuscular fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is currently in solo private practice in Norwich, specializing in neurology, electrodiagnostic medicine and sports neurology. He is board-certified in neurology and electrodiagnostic medicine. Dr. Alessi received his Masters degree in Medical Management from the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University in 2001.

Dr. Alessi is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Colonial Cooperative Care, Inc. (CCC), a medical management company in Norwich, Connecticut. He also serves as a neurologic consultant to many athletic organizations including the University of Connecticut Athletic Department, Norwich Free Academy and the Connecticut State Boxing Commission. Dr. Alessi also served as neurologic consultant to the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

He is medical director of the Backus Hospital stroke center and writes a weekly column, "Healthy Sports," for the Norwich Bulletin that is syndicated through Gatehouse publishing. He is host of "Neuro Frontiers" on Reach MD XM 160 and "Healthy Rounds" on WTIC 1080, the Hartford CBS affiliate. Dr. Alessi's book, "Healthy Sports: A Doctor's Lessons for a Winning Lifestyle," is a compilation of instructive columns.

Sports Medicine

In 1995, Dr. Alessi became a neurologic consultant to the Norwich Navigators and New York Yankees. In 1997, he was named to the consulting staff for the University of Connecticut Athletic Department. He is currently a neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Defenders (double A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) and the Connecticut Sun WNBA basketball team. He is frequently asked to evaluate many individual athletes.

Boxing

Dr. Alessi became involved in the sport of boxing in 1997 when he was appointed as ringside physician for the Connecticut State Boxing Commission as well as the athletic commissions of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe. Since his appointments, he has worked to improve safety in the sport of boxing. He can often be found at ringside where he is a resource to referees when decisions regarding the continuation of boxing contests must be made.

Dr. Alessi contributes monthly to "Healthy Living," a general health column appearing in the Norwich Bulletin. He also writes a weekly column entitled "Healthy Sports" that appears in the Norwich Bulletin and is syndicated to Gate House Publishing affiliates. The column is accompanied by a weekly podcast and blog. Dr. Alessi recently published his first book titled, "Healthy Sports: A Doctor’s Lessons for a Winning Lifestyle." He also hosts "Healthy Rounds with Dr. Anthony Alessi," a weekly radio talk show on WTIC 1080.

Dr. Alessi is a board-certified neurologist in private practice in Norwich, CT since 1986. Prior to that he completed his neurology residency and fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is currently an associate clinical professor of neurology at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Alessi first became involved in sports medicine when he worked as an athletic trainer while attending Manhattan College. In 1995 he began an affiliation with New York Yankees which continues to the present. He has been a neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Defenders, the San Francisco Giants double A affiliate. In 1997 he was named to the consulting staff for the University of Connecticut Athletic Department. He is currently neurologic consultant to the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA.

Dr. Alessi became involved in the sport of boxing in 1997 when he was appointed as ringside physician for the Connecticut State Boxing Commission by commissioner John Burns. He was also appointed to the athletic commissions of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Mohegan Tribe. Since his appointments, he has worked tirelessly for the improvement of safety in the sport of boxing. Dr. Alessi was instrumental in the recent revision of the state guidelines requiring more stringent neurologic evaluation before anyone is allowed to participate in a boxing event in the state of Connecticut. He was named "Ringside Physician of the Year 2009" by the American Association of Ringside Physicians in recognition of his efforts. Dr. Alessi also publishes and lectures on various topics related to sports neurology. He writes a weekly column, "Healthy Sports," which appears in the Norwich Bulletin and is syndicated to Gate House Publishing affiliates. His book, "Healthy Sports: A Doctors Lessons for a Winning Lifestyle," is a compilation of many instructive columns. Dr. Alessi broadcasts a "Healthy Sports Report" each week on WTIC 1080.
